Julia was nervous, he could tell. And he was so glad he’d come along. She was so nervous, she didn’t even realize when he’d taken her hand—he doubted she registered it even now that she was clutching it tightly.

“Everything looks great!” Dr. Clarke said with a sunny look. “The pregnancy is progressing beautifully.”

The probe slid across Julia’s belly.

“See there? That’s...you said you want to know the sex, right?”

Julia nodded.

“That’s her arm.”

Julia was clearly doing everything she could not to cry and failing miserably. Biting her lip didn’t help at all, and her beautiful wide eyes leaked streams in no time. She looked like she was trying to keep quiet, but was soon in ugly-cry mode, and even then she still looked radiant and gorgeous to him.

“Did you guys pick out a name yet?” the doctor asked, glancing back and forth between them.

“Hm? Oh. No,” Julia said, and his heart swelled as he realized she didn’t quickly correct the doctor. “We aren’t...”

“Sure just yet,” he finished, winking at Julia.

Why bother correcting the doctor? It didn’t matter whether she knew the real deal or not. Why embarrass Julia?

He was actually surprised he’d pushed the words out in time to stop her—his voice felt like it had been stolen as he stood there holding her hand, watching her eager eyes on the ultrasound image of the tiny human in her womb.

She couldn’t take her eyes off the child, and he had trouble wrestling his eyes from her. But he managed to glance over at the image at some point, and soon found himself trapped in fascination as well.

No matter how much his brain understood that babies were made every day—every second probably—he couldn’t help thinking of the shadowy image as a miracle.
